Steampunk Style
I am currently designing a bachelor’s condo right now in a style called “Steampunk” which is defined as:
a subgenre of science fiction and fantasy featuring advanced machines and other technology based on steam power of the 19th century and taking place in a recognizable historical period or a fantasy world.I had heard some about it from a good friend of mine just weeks before, so when my client requested it I was very excited. Every client brings a new designing experience for me.
I have really been enjoying the process of designing and have paired up again with the fantastic duo at SOWA. We are creating 4 furniture pieces in this style along with a matching decorated space. His sensory condo will include the following mood inducing stimuli texture, color, lighting.
So this Valentines Day I am dedicating to the fun fashion, objects, lighting and furniture in this style. Visit us at http://www.facebook.com/MisturaInteriorDesign to see my Steampunk Picks.

Mistura Looks Ahead to 2012
In our blog this past year, we’ve examined the ways that Mistura Interior Design uses Mood-Inducing Stimuli, including Video, Texture, Light/Color, Words/Language, Music/Sound, and Smell/Scent, to make our projects come to life in order to tell our clients’ story through space. And we started to look at how we pull all these elements together in our project spotlight on a Florida loft.
As we close out 2011, we are so pleased to announce that this month’s Bedrooms and Baths magazine, in which Mistura Interior Design is featured, has hit newsstands! You can find the 4-page spread on the inside front cover and pages 28, 29, 30, and 31. Pick up a copy and let us know what you think!
In 2012, we hope you’ll consider what story you want to tell and how you want to tell it. Your space is yours, and it should be a reflection of you, irrespective of which combination of stimuli you choose. As always, if you need guidance, advice, or a bold new concept for your space, we hope you’ll contact us here at Mistura. We’ll help you in every way we can!
To kick off the New Year, Melinda Cabanilla of Mistura Interior Design will return to SoWa Vintage Market on January 6 and 8 to present a design vignette based on the single girl’s living space, the Bachelorette Pad. You’ll recall that in December, Melinda was the featured designer in the Designer Curated Corner, a weekly presentation at SoWa during which a designer chooses pieces from the market à la American Pickers, and creates a design based on a design vignette or theme. That design vignette was the Bachelor Pad. The Bachelor Pad and the Bachelorette Pad designs are a specialty of Mistura.
SoWa Vintage Market features the unique and fabulous antiques of more than 25 dealers. Stop by and check it out! (And if you’re there January 6 and 8, be sure to say hi to Melinda! Remember, you’ll find her in the Bachelorette Pad!)
On behalf of everyone at Mistura Interior Design, we wish you a happy and healthy New Year!

Picking Mantiques at SoWa Vintage Market with Melinda Cabanilla of Mistura Interior Design to Create the Ultimate Bachelor Pad

Last week at the SoWa Vintage Market, Melinda Cabanilla of Mistura Interior Design was the featured designer in the Designer Curated Corner, a weekly presentation at SoWa during which a designer chooses event, chooses pieces from the à la American Pickers, and creates a design based on a design vignette or theme. For her design vignette, Melinda chose the Bachelor Pad.
The event was fantastic and extremely well received. “Melinda has a really interesting way of interpreting the pieces from the market,” said Stephanie Pernice, one of the founders of the SoWa Vintage Market. “Her whole angle is great – her love of industrial form. She sees what has good design bones and the ways it can give texture to someone’s home. She pulled some great mantiques for her vignette and put them together in such a skillful way. She really has a different vision and puts it all together.
“The vignette was just awesome;she conceived of things that we didn’t see and we had the pieces right in front of us. A designer like Melinda can come to SoWa Vintage Market, bring somebody through, and help them pick the stuff that is perfect for them – like a bachelor – and get them to see the pieces in a different way.”
Melinda will be returning to the SoWa Vintage Market to present another vignette on January 6 and 8, 2012, this time focused on the single girl’s pad.
December 18 is the last SoWa Vintage Market of 2011. Stop by to check the unique and fabulous antiques that the markets more than 25 dealers have to offer. The market will resume in the new year on January 6.
If you have last minute Christmas shopping to do, this might be the perfect place for you!
At Mistura Interior Design, we work to understand the specific needs and wants of each client and job, and determine how specific pieces can be used to make your house a home.

Using the Mood-Inducing Stimuli to Tell Your Interior Design Story
Over the past few weeks, we’ve introduced you to the uses and applications of six of the Seven Mood-Inducing Stimuli: Video, Texture, Light/Color, Words/Language, Music/Sound, and Smell/Scent. Now it’s time to see how it all comes together in Storytelling.
Whether it’s a residential or commercial space, each room can tell its own story. Some spaces start out as blank canvases, so you’re able to start your own story from the beginning. Some spaces, especially older ones, have their own character that you can use to tell your story. Or bring out a story that’s already there.
Think about a haunted house. If you were to create one from scratch, you’d use all of the other stimuli to set the mood. But then you’d need to think about the story you’re telling. Is it non-stop screaming and flashing lights to keep the scariness going? Or is it haunting organ music with low lighting and frightening messages written on the walls? Different combinations of sights, sounds, smells, and textures can tell very different stories.
It’s the same with any space. What story does a white room with soft music and relaxing projections on the wall tell? What about a library with candlelight and Latin phrases etched above a fireplace? What about a dance club that simulates a cruise ship, complete with a shuffleboard deck and the smell of sea spray? All distinct stories told in unique ways.
A great example of using all the stimuli to create a story came into play in one of our recent projects for a client in Florida. She wanted to create the feeling of relaxation, of being on vacation at a hip, high-end boutique hotel, which we succeeded in doing using many of the elements from the mood-inducing stimuli, including light/color and texture. We will be chronicling the project over the next few posts. Stay tuned! You can see some before and after photos here.
What story do you want your space to tell?
At Mistura Interior Design, we work to understand the specific needs and wants of each client and job, and determine how sensory stimuli can be used to achieve your desired outcomes.
